Sydney International Polo Pony Auction 2009 branded a Success.

Buyers came from interstate and overseas to bid at the first International Polo Pony Sale held at the Sydney Polo Club at Richmond northwest of Sydney.

The Auction day started at 9.30amwith a procession of all the horses on the Supremo field. All horses were turned outed in a professional manner and were demonstrated to the buyers and guests.

The auction began at 2pm,world renown 10 Goal polo player, Sinclair Hill open the auction and professional livestock auctioneer Ian McDuie conducted the business end. St Arnou beer and Alto Group were the sponsors on the day. With prices starting at $4000 for green horses that had just been stick and balled and were yet to play, the average price came in at $10000, this demonstrated that there is a strong demand across the board for Polo Ponies

The top price of $25,000 was paid by Queensland player and patron Glen Wright, who mostly plays medium goal polo, said that his purchase,Shadow, was an ideal horse for this level. Prepared for sale by Dick Doolin for Victorian breeder and player John Patterson, Shadow is purpose bred for polo, being by Sharka, a son of Goldfinger which was bred by Sinclair Hill.

The Sydney Polo Club offered a number of its own ponies, prepared by the resident professional, Rob Ballard. One of the star lots, Dolly, who had won champion pony in a number of tournaments in Queensland this year,was passed in on a bid of $70,000, and negotiations were still taking place after the sale.

Several horses brought at the sale have found new homes interstate, with 6 ponies leaving for Western Australia, 4 to Queensland and 3 to New Zealand.

This year's auction has been the first in a 10 year plan.

The auction will serve as a reliable and on going distribution point for polo professional to sell their ponies and an opportunity for players of all levels to buy and sell horses.
