Club History

The Sydney Polo Club has its roots as far back in history as 1870. It was reported in the 'Sydney Town and Country' journal on the 15th August, 1874 that the first known polo match in Australia was played at Sydney's Moore Park with Sydney Polo Club being the first club in the southern hemisphere.

Sydney Polo club continued into the 1880's and 1890's and it is believed Banjo Paterson was an active member during this time. The NSW Polo association was formed in 1892; the year 'Banjo' composed the  'Geebung Polo Club'. Around that time Polo also started to take off in the UK and the USA.

It is thought that the Game of Polo dates back to origins in Tibet around 2000 years ago. The first recorded polo tournament was in 600 BC when the Turcoman's beat the Persians in a public match. The Persians and the Mogul conquerors of India, spread the game of polo across the eastern world.

The modern age of polo began when the British discovered the game in Manipur on the boarder of India and Burma and founded one of the worlds polo first modern day polo clubs at Silchan.
